Extreme Property Damage Due to Mississippi River Flooding

November has not been kind to residents in Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee along the Mississippi river. Major flooding has been brought on due to record rainfalls in the central US and the resulting downriver outpour. The extent of the damage is yet to be determined, but it is estimated to be substantial. Entire neighborhoods are underwater – 1,000 homes in Memphis alone – and officials say that the flooding damage cannot be assessed until the water recedes.  The cumulative cost of damage from the Mississipi river flood could approach several billion dollars, and a substantial portion of that total will go toward repairing and rebuilding homes, commercial properties and farms. Insured property owners will be covered to some degree by their private insurance plans or by the National Flood Insurance Program, but those who are not insured will be responsible for the costs due to the flood themselves. Sadly, this is just the beginning of the effects due to extreme flooding in Louisiana. New Orleans will experience the worst around May 23rd. The devastation runs deep – up to 25,000 citizens of small towns will not have a chance of moving back into their homes.
